Quo vadis, Team Philippines?

LET’S call a spade a spade. Team Philippines faded into oblivion in the sixteen days that separated the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Games; and the whole world was witness to the embarrassment.

Our athletes failed us. Though they did their best – after all, who goes to the Olympics to earn a loss – it wasn’t good enough. And telling them that they are no less heroes is being shallow. Placating only strips the agony off defeat, taking with it lessons losses bring.

And we failed our athletes. The government sent athletes like long-jumper Henry Dagmil abroad, without his coach, to train for six months or so. In contrast, other countries sent theirs for training that lasted three years with a full compliment of support staff.

No big surprise there when the South Cotabato native wondered aloud how he was supposed to win when his training was only a portion of what his competitors got a...

the St. Mary the Protector Cathedral viewed from the great Istiqlal Mosque

i cannot adequately describe the contrast. my prose simply cannot depict the beautiful irony of it all. on one side of a very busy street is the St. Mary the Protector Cathedral, splended with its neo-gothic spires and arches. at the other end is the great Istiqlal Mosque, the largest mosque in all of Southeast Asia. and the irony: one can only see the beauty of the other from the other side.

Postscript Indonesia

AFTER two workweeks in the Indonesian capital, I’m finally back home; back in the loving embrace of my wife, back to eating home-cooked meals, back to sniffing bore cleaner and gun-smoke.

My Indonesian experience was great, thanks to three local journalist-friends—Ikram Putra, Hendrawan Setiawan and Tutut Handayani—who took time to bring me and the other journalists around to good watering holes, great eating joints and places where we could get stuff we needed at a bargain after class.

The Indonesian populace is predominantly Islamic. So one can hardly find food considered haraam by the faith. But this is of no concern since Indonesian cooking does miraculous things to mutton and beef, as well as to fish and vegetables.

Food in Indonesia is priced just about the same as food in the Philippines, though because of the currency exchange, the actual figures can be mind-blowing. I’ve never bought bottled tea for 3,000 before. But, then again, I’ve never had the pleasure of being a...

But, ordinarily, things things don't escalate beyond harsh words and stern looks.

So yesterday (June 23) must not have been an ordinary day, particularly for lawyers Deolito Alvarez and Mariano Jesus Cuenco.

The two were in near fisticuffs yesterday morning, moments after Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Geraldine Faith Econg told them to meet her in chambers.

The call to a closed-door conference was supposed to de-escalate the already heated exchange the two had in court, right after Econg began hearing a civil case that pitted the two against each other.

But according to courtroom sources, the two went for each others throat almost immediately after stepping in chambers.

"I was going to threaten them with contempt but I was afraid that it would only worsen the situation so I just told them to cool off," Econg said.

It took two Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) policemen – PO3 Albin Bayno and SPO1...

#sunstar at the undernet.org server

when ian narvios, a friend since prep, joined sunstar as webmaster in late 1999, weeks went by without us seeing each other. a ludicrous prospect when taking into account how the sunstar building is only so-so big. nevertheless, he went on duty hours after mine ended.

to catch up, ian and i, with the help of the more computer savvy people in the office -- among them louie ocampo and norvelle kiamko -- opened a IRC channel on the undernet.org server and called it, what else, #sunstar.

over the months that followed, other people -- among them jojit lambus, butch cañares, benjie ordoñez, grace rigodon and a few others -- stumbled into the chatroom and joined us in making noise.

they weren't the only ones. soon, college kids like anthony "tuyom" valle and lederlowe "loweeh" rosos also began dropping by, joining our weekly programmed chats and debates over current issues.

in 2002 or thereabouts, when ian and louie left sunstar, maintaining the channel got difficult. this, as ...
